A Surprise Proposal at Morris Arboretum | Philadelphia Proposal Photographer
As a Philadelphia Proposal Photographer, I know that some locations are meaningful because they already hold years of memories. Others become meaningful because of what happens there for the very first time.
During a Memorial Day Weekend trip visiting both of their hometowns, Mike had one more stop planned for Katie. He chose Morris Arboretum & Gardens of the University of Pennsylvania as the place where they would make a brand new memory together.
After months of planning, a secluded pathway beneath the trees became the place where Mike asked Katie to marry him. And she said yes!
Getting to document the surprise and the just-engaged joy afterward made this Morris Arboretum proposal especially fun.
Is Morris Arboretum a good place for a Philadelphia proposal?
Morris Arboretum is a beautiful Philadelphia proposal location for couples who love gardens and greenery. It also offers plenty of variety for engagement photos afterward. With winding pathways and natural scenery, you can find quieter spots that feel tucked away from the busier areas of the gardens.
Mike already knew he wanted to propose at Morris Arboretum! He had been checking out a previous Morris Arboretum engagement session on Instagram before reaching out. Since he would be coming from out of town, he needed some help with the smaller details about where and how. I was able to share galleries from both an engagement session and a wedding I had shot there before. That helped Mike to get a better sense of the property and its possibilities.
There was one detail that mattered especially to him. Katie loves weeping trees! He hoped to incorporate them into the proposal and have a little privacy too. Thankfully, when scouting the location, I found European Beech trees that would make the perfect backdrop for their forever yes.
How can a photographer help plan a surprise proposal at Morris Arboretum?
Planning a proposal from out of town can take a little extra coordination. A Philadelphia proposal photographer who knows the location can help make the logistics easier. Plus, I always arrive early to scout the area and find exactly what you are looking for.
For Mike and Katie, I found a secluded pathway right in the area of the European Beech trees with no one else around!
It felt like a little secret tucked inside the gardens.
I took photos and sent Mike directions showing him exactly where to go. That meant he could focus on Katie and not stress about what was about to happen!
When they reached the pathway, Mike finally got to have the moment he had been planning for months.
Katie said yes!
What happens after a surprise proposal?
Your proposal photos do not have to end as soon as you say yes. Adding engagement photos afterward gives you time to soak in what just happened. You can also capture those first moments together as an engaged couple.
For Katie and Mike, the proposal was only the beginning of their time at Morris Arboretum. We spent another 45 minutes exploring the property together capturing many varieties of engagement photos. They walked through the gardens and along the pathways, stopping at different spots for photos. A stone wall, an archway, and small ponds all added even more variety.
There was no need to turn the afternoon into a formal photoshoot. They had literally just gotten engaged! There were happy tears flowing, plenty of laughter and that surreal feeling of realizing you get to start planning forever with your favorite person.
The photos captured this chapter of their story in a natural way.
Engagement photos that feel like the two of you
One of the best moments from Katie and Mike’s Morris Arboretum engagement photos happened when they reached a huge grassy hill.
Katie looked at Gabriella and asked, “Can we frolic down the hill?” The answer was obviously yes.
They took off down the hill hand in hand, twirling and laughing together. There were kisses between the spinning and plenty of movement as they soaked in everything that had just happened.
It was completely them.
That is exactly what engagement photos can be. You do not need to spend the entire session standing perfectly still or worrying about the perfect pose. A little direction can help you feel comfortable, but there should also be room for your personalities and relationship to take over.
Sometimes that means a quiet moment together beneath the trees.
Sometimes it means barreling down a grassy hill because you just got engaged and frolicking feels like the only appropriate response.
